The Hout Bay Harbour and Yacht Club is a magical marine destination. Earth Kids were lucky enough to explore what life would be like on board a yacht AND off the grid. They met Craig Dunlop, Rear Commodore of the Hout Bay Yacht Club, and his pride and joy, the 42-foot Gioia built in England.
Craig explained to the Earth Kids the intricacies of sailing on an Eco Yacht that uses the sun, wind and sea to generate electricity and to purify drinking water. His water maker desalinates the water so that he and his wife can drink it when out at sea. Wind generates electricity by turning the propeller, to the tune of 12V while the yacht’s engine runs on diesel.
Down in the galley, they cook on a gas stove. Solar panels also supply power for heat and electricity. The toilet is based on marine sanitation principles and processes waste so that it can safely return to the sea. Watch the film here!
The second visit to the Hout Bay Yacht Club involved the release of tiny glass bottles. Each tiny corked bottle contained a personal message from each Earth Kid. Read more about that here.
